Filipinos turn to AI to verify information, with usage set to surge
About 60% are expected to use GenAI in the next two to three years.
More Filipinos are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to understand information, with adoption set to rise sharply in the next few years.
About 30% to 40% are already using generative AI tools, but this could reach 60% within two to three years, said Mimrah Mahmood, vice president for enterprise in Asia Pacific at Meltwater.
Within that period, the population will be familiar with or indirectly using platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini, Mahmood told the 2026 GovMedia Summit in the Philippines.
The shift could change how the public engages with government policies.
“People will not just receive information—they will verify it using AI systems,” he said. “They will ask algorithms if the information is accurate and how it affects them personally.”
This marks a break from the traditional model of government communication, where agencies distribute information through media channels to shape public opinion.
Information now flows through a ‘multi-voice public sphere’, where various sources and platforms influence how narratives are formed, according to Mahmood.
“This is why governments must learn how to communicate not just with people, but with machines,” he added.
Moreover, he flagged the rising risks from deepfakes and misinformation, as well as the growing role of AI in analysing public sentiment at scale.
“When there are over a million social media mentions daily about the Philippine government, the best way to analyse them is through this technology,” Mahmood said.
