Lumut Naval Shipyard scores win at GovMedia Awards 2025 for ship constructions

Undertaking the construction of five Littoral Combat Ships for the Royal Malaysian Navy as part of Malaysia’s maritime defence capability enhancement.

Shipbuilding company Lumut Naval Shipyard (LUNAS) received the Malaysia Public-Private  Partnership of the Year - Maritime & Ports category win at the GovMedia Conference & Awards  2025 for its role in the ongoing construction of five Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) for the Royal  Malaysian Navy (RMN), a project aimed at upholding the country’s national maritime defence capabilities.

The LCS project stands out as a milestone in Malaysia's maritime industry, incorporating cutting-edge technology and innovative ship design tailored to address diverse operational requirements. As the nation’s only AA-status local shipyard with full capabilities to design and build missile-capable warships, LUNAS is currently spearheading the construction of 5 LCS vessels.

To measure success, the company has implemented rigorous project management frameworks,  performance indicators, and regular progress assessments. The shipyard has successfully achieved key milestones, including hull construction, system integration, and preparations for sea trials, demonstrating its capacity to manage large-scale defence projects.

The project is expected to significantly boost the operational readiness of the Royal Malaysian  Navy. Additionally, it has generated substantial socio-economic benefits by creating employment opportunities, boosting local industries through procurement of materials and services, and nurturing a skilled workforce.

The partnership between LUNAS and the RMN reflects Malaysia's commitment to strengthening its maritime security. As the Navy modernises its fleet with advanced LCS vessels, the collaboration ensures these assets are designed to meet current operational demands whilst remaining adaptable to future advancements.

“Through innovation, effectiveness, and a shared commitment to national security, this initiative not only strengthens Malaysia's maritime defence but also demonstrates the potential of collaboration in driving meaningful progress. At LUNAS, we see this as more than a project — it is a reflection of our mantra: Defining Excellence in all that we do,” LUNAS said.
