Airport Authority Hong Kong wins at GovMedia Conference & Awards 2026
HKIA introduced automated car parks, offering passengers a fully integrated experience from online reservation to seamless self-parking upon arrival.
Airport Authority Hong Kong won the Hong Kong Smart City Initiative of the Year - Aviation at the GovMedia Conference & Awards 2026 for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Automated Car Parks - Park & Fly and Park & Visit. The initiative addressed a transport gap for Greater Bay Area (GBA) car owners who wanted to reach HKIA directly but did not hold dual-plate registration for driving into Hong Kong.
Park & Fly was developed as a fully automated car park at the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Launched as a supporting facility under the government's Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles policy, the facility allowed Greater Bay Area (including selected Chinese Mainland cities and Macao) drivers to park their vehicles and connect to onward flights at HKIA without clearing Hong Kong immigration. The policy breakthrough and co-ordination across Guangdong, Macao, and Hong Kong allowed registered users to drive to Hong Kong without dual-plate vehicle requirements or Hong Kong driving licence obligations. These arrangements also supported 24-hour operations for the car park and SkyPier Terminal, giving Greater Bay Area travellers with early morning or late-night flights another way to reach HKIA.
The car park used a fully unmanned high-density double-deck racking system operated by Automated Guided Vehicles. It was supported by online booking, contactless licence plate recognition, automated storage and retrieval, and self-service payment kiosks.
Since its launch, Park & Fly has sustained consistent cross-border vehicle use and continues to serve passenger, reaffirming its value as an essential airport service. Its automated parking system operated well, providing seamless travel experience and additional way of travelling particularly during peak travel periods.
The service also had reserved space for expansion. Park & Visit, a forthcoming automated car park, will use the same cross-boundary policy framework and operating model to extend self-drive access to leisure and business travellers entering Hong Kong under the expanded Southbound Travel Scheme.
