Government announces new farming innovation investment in the UK
Backing to further support research and development in agricultural technology.
The UK government is investing $17m (£12.6m) to continue driving innovation in farming.
Delivered in partnership with Innovate UK (the country's innovation agency) via two Farming Innovation Programme competitions, the new funding aims to facilitate solutions designed to address industry challenges, reduce costs and seasonal labour, and enhance animal health.
The competition for early-stage ideas, which will be tested through feasibility studies, will open on 13 October. The one for later-stage research and development projects will start on 15 September.
Previously funded concepts include early-warning health systems for cattle and robotic strawberry pickers.
"This is about giving farming businesses the tools they need to thrive," said Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner.
"By working with investors to fund and develop new equipment and technology, we are helping farms become more resilient, productive, and profitable.
"These grants put the Plan for Change into action – supporting farmers to adapt, compete, and grow, whatever challenges and opportunities lie ahead."
The goal of the competitions is to further support businesses in developing and bringing new products, processes, and services to market for the benefit of farmers, growers, or foresters.
It was noted that, over the current Parliament, the UK government has broken records by allocating £11.8b to sustainable farming and food production.
