The Hong Kong Association of Banks wins at GovMedia Conference & Awards 2026
The financial accessibility initiative supports vulnerable groups and senior citizens across the banking sector.
The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB) has received the award for “Hong Kong Social Equity and Inclusion Initiative of the Year – Statutory Board” at the GovMedia Conference & Awards 2026. This recognition highlights HKAB’s leadership in promoting industry-wide financial inclusion and accessible banking services for elderly customers and customers with disabilities.
HKAB’s financial accessibility initiative is guided by the principles of dignity, autonomy, and independence, and is aligned with internationally recognised frameworks. This initiative reflects the banking sector’s ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and ensuring equitable access to financial services.
Since 2018, HKAB has developed and implemented four sets of industry guidelines to enhance accessibility for customers with disabilities and elderly customers, addressing physical, sensory, intellectual, and cognitive needs. In response to evolving demographic trends and changing market needs, two major updates were launched in January 2026.
The Guideline on Elderly-Friendly Banking Services supports the development of the silver economy by establishing a set of core principles and recommended practices. These include enhancements to physical facilities, service design, customer education, and initiatives to promote financial literacy and digital adoption among older customers. Key recommendations include simplified mobile interfaces, elderly-friendly applications, and the provision of basic bank accounts without minimum balance or deposit requirements.
In parallel, the second edition of the Practical Guideline on Barrier-Free Banking Services further strengthens provisions for physical and sensory accessibility. It introduces features such as wheelchair-accessible branch layouts, voice-enabled ATMs, and assistive technologies for customers with visual or hearing impairments.
As the statutory representative body of the banking sector, HKAB comprises 148 member banks. These financial accessibility initiatives have been spearheaded by the HKAB Financial Services Delivery Channels Committee, which brings together industry experts to develop and enhance service standards for sector-wide adoption. The Committee has played a pivotal role in formulating and updating the guidelines, reinforcing the importance of accessibility and inclusion as core elements of modern banking services.
