How the public sector can prepare for the Gen Z workforce
Gen Zs are expected to account for about 30% of the workforce by 2030.
Governments need to reshape their talent agenda amidst the growing number of Gen Zs in the workforce, McKinsey noted.
Gen Zs are expected to account for about 30% of the global workforce by 2030. In 2021, Gen Z made up only 1.6% of the workforce in the US, while Gen X accounted for up to 42%.
“One consequence of this disproportion is that the government faces a challenge when it comes to mentoring, apprenticing, and developing its next-generation workforce,” McKinsey flagged.
“This has significant implications for organizations and leaders at every level.”
In this light, McKinsey created a six-part agenda to help attract and retain public sector employees, accounting for changes in demographics.
This involves developing a strong employee value proposition; planning strategically for future workforce needs; and establishing dynamic career pathways.
It also covers considering stronger diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (DIA) approaches; modernizing operating models; and deploying AI, generative AI, and automation in talent management.
“Implementing the model will require strong leadership commitment and capabilities, as well as employee involvement in all aspects of the transformation.”
