Medical Device Authority bags win at GovMedia Awards 2025 for regulatory process enhancements
It has adopted advanced technology and has implemented meaningful improvements to transform service delivery and strengthen stakeholder engagement.
Malaysia Ministry of Health’s federal statutory agency Medical Device Authority (MDA) won the Malaysia Digital Initiative of the Year - Health category at the GovMedia Conference & Awards 2025 for its success in making significant advancements in the regulatory control of medical devices in the country.
Amongst the agency’s key achievements has been the streamlining of the medical device registration process, which previously took around two to three months. MDA has implemented a comprehensive overhaul of this process.
In 2024, through internal improvements, it successfully reduced the registration timeline to just 14 to 21 days. This expedited processing not only accelerated the availability of essential medical devices but also improved the efficiency of its regulatory operations, creating a smoother experience for stakeholders and ensuring timely access to critical technologies.
MDA has also fully embraced digital transformation as a core strategy to enhance its operations and services. In response to the growing need for modernisation, it has implemented several advanced digital solutions that significantly improve efficiency and user experience. These include the creation of digital certificates, the Medcast 3.0, the MDA chatbot, and the BayarNow System.
These initiatives have led the agency to elevate internal efficiency and enrich stakeholder experiences, effectively meeting the dynamic needs of the healthcare sector and highlighting its commitment to modernising regulatory processes.
At the same time, MDA plays a vital role in the swift commercialisation of innovative medical devices by ensuring compliance with safety and efficacy standards. It provides guidance and resources to help developers navigate the regulatory landscape, facilitating smoother approvals.
These achievements, centred on streamlining registration processes, embracing digital transformation, and promoting innovation, underscore the agency’s commitment to excellence in medical device regulation.
