Bahrain International Airport secures aviation process honour at GovMedia Conference & Awards 2026

The Security Screening Cupholder Initiative solves a common passenger challenge without infrastructure changes.

Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), the operator and managing body of Bahrain International Airport, received the Process Optimization of the Year – Aviation accolade at the GovMedia Conference & Awards 2026 for its innovative Security Screening Cupholder Initiative.

The first-of-its-kind solution introduces a simple, low-cost cupholder that keeps beverages upright during security screening without requiring any infrastructure changes. Developed by BAC’s Innovation team in collaboration with key stakeholders, the cupholder fits seamlessly into existing trays and works with the airport’s liquid-detection screening equipment.

The initiative addresses a common passenger challenge, where passengers were often asked to dispose of drinks before screening, creating unnecessary waste, and slowing part of the journey.

With the new process, passengers place their beverage in the cupholder provided by security screening staff, allowing the tray to move through the screening process as usual before collecting their drink after inspection.

BAC trialled several prototypes in operational settings, with Aviation Security teams and stakeholders assessing compatibility with X-ray systems, ease of use, and impact on checkpoint flow. Passenger feedback also confirmed the need for a clearer beverage handling process and showed strong interest in using the solution once available.

The initiative demonstrates that meaningful innovation does not have to be complex or costly; it can solve real operational challenges whilst enhancing efficiency, reducing liquid waste, and improving the passenger experience.
