New law to ease entry into internet service industry in PH
Legislation to address issues of prohibitive cost and poor connectivity.
"It is about time that we empower Filipinos through greater access to information and connectivity."
Those were the words of Senate President Francis Escudero following the enactment of the "Konektadong Pinoy" (translated as "Connected Filipinos") law in the Philippines.
Also known as the Open Access in Data Transmission Act, the new legislation seeks to solve the country's problems in terms of internet connectivity and cost by removing competition barriers and encouraging infrastructure development.
Escudero highlighted in a release: "The Philippines has one of the highest internet connectivity costs in the world considering the speeds it offers to consumers.
"But more than bringing down the rates, the Konektadong Pinoy Act is about providing greater access to information and markets to Filipinos who live far from the cities and in remote areas."
The lawmaker said "long overdue" internet connectivity services will be rolled out faster in Philippine communities as a result of the data transmission legislation.
"Hopefully our industry giants will support the implementation of the law and work with government as partners of growth and digital inclusivity for all Filipinos," he added.
According to the July 2025 Speedtest Global Index, the Philippines has a median download speed of 103.71 Mbps for fixed broadband and 58.37 Mbps for mobile.
